Timber Ridge Treatment Center decrease restraints by 65% in two years

In 2002, a special challenge was created by the administration at Timber Ridge Treatment Center. That challenge was to reduce the number of restraints by 50%. They did better than that. From November of 2003 to November of 2005 the number of restraints per population of 40 campers decreased from 754 per year to 269. That is a drop of approximately 63 per month or two a day to 22 a month and only two every three days. At present Timber Ridge Treatment Center has decreased their restraints by almost 65%!!!

What was their strategy? What training did they receive?

Life Connections, Inc. under the direction of senior faculty member Glenn Smith began working with Timber Ridge Treatment Center in the fall of 2002. The goal of this partnership was to get all supervisors and group leaders certified in Applied Control theory. In the fall of 2002 with the help of practicum supervisor Fred Good, all 25 staff members participated in an ACT I and an ACT I practicum. Since that time 10 staff has been certified and 15 have participated in an ACT II.
