The Life Connection’s Personal Life Skills Curriculum was originally created by Glenn Smith and tested in Mecklenburg County Jail North, supported by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The original course curriculum was created to provide research-based solutions to improve recidivism and personal development of individuals who are presently incarcerated. The Life Connections journey involved psychologists, instructional specialists, teachers, administrators, university professors, researchers - all working together for five years - to build an incredibly comprehensive solution to improve the lives of individuals. The curriculums now include programs for incarcerated men, women and juveniles as well as juvenile theft diversion, addictions, couples, and K-12 school life skills.
In March of 1998, Life Connections, Inc. was contracted by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office to provide an Personal life Skills course to male and female inmates preparing to re-enter the community.
All of the Personal Life Skills Courses are based on Perceptual Control Theory and the levels of perception. The course was designed for those individuals who are committed to looking closely at how they have been living their lives, and are now ready to take and even closer look at how they want to live their lives in the future.
With the help of Shelley Roy of Synergy Consulting, Inc.

the “BE–Print” guidebook was created as a tool to help participants self-evaluate. As with the architect’s blue print, the “Be Print” is at hand to assist individuals measure their progress while building a new life. In each “BE–Print”, the levels of perception are presented and put into action. Every participant is invited to examine the following: Core Beliefs, (Systems Level), Values Clarification, (Principles Level), Goals, (Program Level), Action Plans, (Sequence Level), and Management of
Information including one's emotions, (Sensory Level).
Some 1,200 participants have participated in the voluntary course where sometimes over 100 individuals remain on the waiting list. A study done in 2004 showed that those individuals who have completed the course have a 25% greater chance of not returning to jail during their first year. Several graduates of this program and of the Mecklenburg County Jail, once entering the community have continued their study of Perceptual Control Theory by entering the certification program.

Kerry Hardy was a
federal inmate who studied Perceptual Control Theory from a
class taught by Glenn Smith and Life Connections while
incarcerated at the
Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, NC. With his spiritual
faith and the insight that he gained from the sixty hour course
called: Becoming the Person You Really Want to Be, Kerry applied
his new learned philosophy while serving six years in a federal
prison. He writes: “Through understanding Perceptual Control
Theory, I was able to create a reference of who I really wanted
to be” He is now committed to giving back to the same community
which he openly admits he helped destroy. All proceeds from his
book goes to Kerry’s non-profit foundation entitled: The
Foundation for Right Choices.
“If there is any one lesson that Kerry Hardy has learned, and
any one powerful message that he can now preach to: the Masses,”
it is that there are no shortcuts to success” Les Brown
